Introduction

Within an investigation, a variety of tools are used. One of the first things any investigator checks are the databases, which are basically collections of the same type of information that are shared with others in the profession. This information can be shared locally, state-wide, even internationally, depending on the severity of the crime.

When dealing with evidence, machinery that serves different purposes are required. Microscopy allows for the magnification of evidence, something that is used by nearly all sciences. It allows investigators to see minute details they may not have known about before. Machines that deal with light and matter are needed to identify or compare some materials. Evidence is not usually found in perfect conditions for examination and several separation methods exist for sorting it all out. (Citation 14)
